Factors influencing the diversity and distribution of epiphytic lichens and bryophytes on the relict tree <i>Zelkova abelicea</i> (Lam.) Boiss. (<i>Ulmaceae</i>)

Abstract Trees have a crucial importance in the functioning of ecosystems on Earth. They are among largest and longest-living taxa provide habitat shelter to numerous species belonging diverse groups organisms. Relict trees particular interest through their history survival adaptation, because they potentially rare or threatened organisms today. We investigated for first time diversity distribution epiphytic lichens bryophytes found Cretan (Greek) endemic relict phorophyte Zelkova abelicea ( Ulmaceae ). Our results showed that Z. hosts high number epiphytes. The Levka Ori mountain range western Crete seems be hot spot . Bryophytes had highest Mt Kedros central but were absent from several other sites. Moreover, 17% studied recorded 5% never been Greece. Geographical position browsing intensity seem important factors influencing community encountered. Tree morphology (dwarfed arborescent) was also significant composition although it not possible dissociate this factor effect topography. Dwarfed individuals as much arborescent trees.
